This is where we stayed in Quesnel. The Billy Barker Hotel and Casino!
Very afforable, clean rooms. Very friendly. Neat little casino, bar and cafe. |
The drive to Barkerville from Quesnel is approximately an hour. It's quite beautiful.
Make sure you stop in at the neat little town of Wells. |
It's a town where you don't really need to worry about getting hit by a car!
But, it does have a few neat little shops.
|
It looks at though Grizzly Adams may have retired here!
|
The people of Wells seem to be quite profound. The sign says "
Books Were Once Men"
|
Finally, we arrive in Barkville! Greeted by the stagecoach riders.
And............
|
These little guys.
There was much discussion about what they actually were, but they sure were cute... and friendly!
|
The church is the first building you notice when you enter Barkerville.
It's quite an amazing place.
|
Inside is even more amazing. They had actors pretending to be from the old Barkerville
times. This was a priest teaching a little girl how to play the violin.
|
This was the main drag in Barkerville. All the shops are real (fashioned after the original) and the homes and other buildings are all
restored. You can pretty much go inside most buildings, although some displays are roped off.
|
There was even a brothel in Barkerville, in it's day. Apparently the residences were fine with the ladies,
however just down the road in Wells it was a sin and completely forbidden.
|
It's hard to believe that people travelled that far for the idea of gold. Although there were signs all over
town telling stories of how men found their jackpots. Money that would even be worth something today!
|
This would have been a typical gold miners cabin. Again, the actors were really neat. Felt as though you walked
right into the middle of Barkville in its day.
|
We stopped to pet the horses on our way out. I could have stayed longer, poking around and such, but it was time to go. We had a long drive
up to Prince George ahead of us. I highly recommend Barkerville as a place to visit. I would go again tomorrow if I had the chance.
